Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Wasini Island Dolphin & Snorkeling Day Trip

~80 km to Shimoni + 30-min dhow sail | Approx. 1.5 hrs drive

6:00 AM — The morning air still carries the cool breath of the Indian Ocean as your driver collects you from your Diani hotel. The road south hugs the coastline through Msambweni, past coconut palms silhouetted against a pink-gold sunrise and small Swahili fishing villages where the day's catch is already being sorted on the sand. By 7:30 AM you arrive at the ancient slave-trade port of Shimoni — its name means 'place of the hole,' a reference to the coral caves beneath the village where enslaved people were once held before crossing the channel.

At the Shimoni jetty, you board a traditional wooden dhow with billowing white sails and a Swahili crew who know these waters like a second language. As the dhow glides into the Kisite Channel, all eyes scan the turquoise surface — and then it happens: a pod of bottlenose dolphins breaks the surface, their sleek grey bodies arcing through the spray. Sometimes humpback dolphins join the show, their pink-tinged bellies catching the light as they ride the bow wave just meters from your boat. Your heart races as a mother-calf pair surfaces in perfect synchrony, a sight that stays with you long after you've dried off.

By mid-morning the dhow anchors over the coral gardens of Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park. You slip into water so clear you can see the sandy bottom six meters below. Snorkeling here is electric — parrotfish in neon blues and greens nibble at coral heads, a hawksbill sea turtle glides past with effortless grace, and schools of yellow-striped snappers part like curtains as you drift through. The reef hums with life.

Around 1:00 PM the dhow sails to Wasini Island, where a Swahili seafood feast awaits under a makuti-roofed terrace overlooking the channel. Freshly caught crab in coconut sauce, grilled lobster tails, octopus in tamarind, and coconut fish — all served with chapati and tropical fruit. After lunch, walk the mangrove boardwalk that threads through ancient tidal channels, and if the tide is low, explore the otherworldly coral garden — centuries-old coral formations now raised above sea level, weathered into jagged sculptures. The dhow returns you to Shimoni by 4:00 PM, and you're back at your Diani hotel by approximately 5:30 PM, sun-kissed and salt-aired, with an ocean of memories.
