Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Samburu

~350km | Approx. 5.5 hrs

6:00 AM. Depart Nairobi in your private 4x4 safari vehicle, heading north through the green Kikuyu highlands. The road passes through coffee and tea country before climbing toward the Laikipia Plateau. Around the three-hour mark you cross the equator — a photo stop at the roadside marker is a must. The landscape steadily dries as you continue north through Isiolo and into the semi-arid thornbush country of Kenya's northern frontier. By early afternoon you arrive at Samburu National Reserve, entering through the main gate where the Ewaso Ng'iro River cuts a green corridor through the red, sun-baked landscape. Settle into your safari lodge for lunch, then set off on an afternoon game drive along the riverbanks. Samburu is home to species found nowhere else in Kenya — reticulated giraffes with their geometric patterns, Grevy's zebra with narrow pinstripes, and gerenuk standing upright to browse high acacia branches. Elephants emerge from the doum palms to drink at the river's edge as the afternoon light paints the landscape in warm copper tones.

Day 2

Full Day Samburu

6:00 AM. A full day immersed in Samburu's wild northern frontier. The morning drive follows the Ewaso Ng'iro River — the reserve's lifeline — where crocodiles bask on the banks and elephants cross in single file, spraying water as they go. Your guide tracks the 'Samburu Special Five': Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx (with their striking face masks and straight horns), and the blue-legged Somali ostrich. Leopards are commonly seen along the riverine vegetation, often lounging in the branches of a riverside tree. After a bush picnic lunch, the afternoon drive pushes into the northern sectors where dry riverbeds and rocky hillocks provide habitat for cheetahs and large lion prides. Vulturine guineafowl — stunning birds with iridescent blue plumage — scurry through the scrub. The evening light in Samburu is particularly beautiful, the red earth glowing against the pale sky as you return to your lodge.

Day 3

Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

~200km | Approx. 3.5 hrs

7:00 AM. After breakfast, check out of Samburu and drive south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau — approximately three hours through gradually changing terrain. The semi-arid thornbush gives way to rolling grassland as you climb back toward the highlands, with the snow-dusted peaks of Mount Kenya visible to the east. Ol Pejeta is a world-renowned conservation success story and home to all Big Five. Arrive for lunch at your safari camp, then head straight for the conservancy's most iconic residents: Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos on Earth, protected around the clock by armed rangers. Stand just meters from these gentle giants — a humbling, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Continue to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya to see chimps — rescued from the illegal wildlife trade, they swing through the forested enclosure with infectious energy. An afternoon game drive across the open plains reveals lion prides, buffalo herds, and both black and white southern rhinos grazing freely.

Day 4

Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru

~170km | Approx. 3 hrs

7:00 AM. After breakfast, depart Ol Pejeta and drive southwest to Lake Nakuru National Park — approximately three to four hours through the central highlands and down into the Rift Valley. The road winds through agricultural country before descending the escarpment, and by early afternoon you enter Nakuru's compact, wildlife-rich reserve. Check into your safari lodge for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive. The park is one of Kenya's most important rhino sanctuaries — both white and black rhinos thrive here. Drive along the alkaline lakeshore where seasonal flamingo flocks paint the water pink and great white pelicans glide in formation. Rothschild's giraffes browse the fever-tree acacia forest, and waterbuck stand motionless in the grassland. Climb to Baboon Cliff for a sweeping panoramic view of the entire lake basin — the pale alkaline water shimmering against the green forested shoreline. Leopards favour the dense woodland here, and your guide scans the branches as you descend.

Day 5

Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara

~220km | Approx. 4 hrs

7:00 AM. After a morning game drive through Nakuru's acacia woodland — scanning for leopards and rhinos in the soft early light — check out and drive west to the Masai Mara. The route takes approximately five hours through the Rift Valley and Narok, the landscape shifting from the lake basin into rolling Maasai grassland. Beyond Narok, tarmac gives way to red-earth roads winding through the green hills of Maasai country, where herdsmen in bright shukas walk alongside their cattle. By early afternoon you reach the Mara and the golden savannah stretches endlessly before you. Check into your safari lodge for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive — and the difference from the compact parks of the previous days is immediately apparent. Here, the scale is immense: vast herds of wildebeest and zebra stretch to the horizon, giraffe browse the scattered acacias, and lion prides patrol their territories with regal confidence. The Mara is Africa's predator capital, and the chances of encountering big cats are exceptional.

Day 6

Full Day Masai Mara

6:00 AM. A full day to explore the vast Mara ecosystem. The dawn drive heads into the open grasslands where cheetahs perch on termite mounds and hyenas retreat to their dens. Your guide navigates toward the Mara River — a green lifeline cutting through the savannah — where hippos crowd the murky pools and massive Nile crocodiles bask on the sandy banks. During the Great Migration (July–October), this is the stage for Earth's most dramatic wildlife spectacle — hundreds of thousands of wildebeest massing along the banks before plunging into the current. Enjoy a bush picnic lunch under an acacia tree, then explore different sectors in the afternoon. The Mara Triangle offers sweeping views from the Oloololo Escarpment, while the central plains are home to enormous buffalo herds and the resident elephant families. An optional hot air balloon safari (extra cost) launches at dawn for a breathtaking aerial view. An optional Maasai village visit offers a glimpse into the ancient culture that has coexisted with this wildlife for centuries. Return for dinner as the savannah glows amber in the setting sun.

Day 7

Masai Mara to Amboseli

~400km | Approx. 7 hrs

7:00 AM. After a sunrise game drive and breakfast, check out of the Mara and begin the drive south to Amboseli National Park — a long but scenic transfer of approximately seven to eight hours via Nairobi and the Namanga highway. The landscape transforms completely: from the Mara's golden grassland, through the Rift Valley, past the capital, and into the drying plains of southern Kenya. Scattered acacia and red soil replace the lush savannah, and as you approach Amboseli in the late afternoon, Africa's highest peak reveals itself — Mount Kilimanjaro, its glaciers gleaming above the plains. The sight never loses its power. Check into your safari lodge and, if time allows, enjoy a short evening game drive. Amboseli is famous for its massive elephant herds — family groups of twenty or thirty strong parade across the dusty plains with Kilimanjaro as their backdrop. The Enkongo Narok swamp glows green against the arid landscape, drawing hippos, wading birds, and buffalo to its edges.

Day 8

Amboseli to Nairobi

~240km | Approx. 4 hrs

6:00 AM. Your final safari morning starts early — dawn is the best time for Kilimanjaro photography, when the snow-capped summit stands crisp and clear before the clouds build. Your guide heads toward the swamp edges where large bull elephants emerge from the papyrus to drink, water dripping from their massive tusks as the mountain rises behind them. Crowned cranes, pelicans, and African jacanas pick through the shallows. Drive to Observation Hill for a final panoramic farewell — the entire Amboseli basin spread below you, elephant herds moving like grey shadows through the morning mist, and Kilimanjaro dominating the southern horizon. It's a fitting grand finale to eight days of extraordinary Kenyan wildlife. By 9:00 AM, return for breakfast and check out. The drive to Nairobi takes approximately four hours through the Athi Plains. Arrive in the city by early to mid-afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
