7-Day Samburu & Masai Mara Safari
Kenya's Northern Frontier Meets the Legendary Mara
This 7-day safari combines two of Kenya's most contrasting and spectacular wildlife destinations. Samburu National Reserve is Kenya's wild northern frontier — a semi-arid landscape along the Ewaso Ng'iro River where you'll find the 'Special Five' animals found nowhere else in Kenya: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich. Then fly south to the legendary Masai Mara for the Great Migration and Africa's densest concentration of predators. Two utterly different worlds, one incredible safari.
Safari Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve
6:00 AM. Depart Nairobi in your private 4x4 safari vehicle, heading north on the highway toward Mount Kenya. The road climbs through the lush Kikuyu highlands — tea plantations and red-soil farms give way to dense forest as you gain altitude. Around the three-hour mark, you cross the equator near Nanyuki — a roadside marker commemorates the moment. The landscape begins to change dramatically: the green highlands dry out into the semi-arid thornbush country of Kenya's northern frontier. By early afternoon, you descend into the Samburu basin and arrive at your safari lodge along the Ewaso Ng'iro River — a brown ribbon of life snaking through the red-earth landscape. Settle in for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive. Samburu is immediately different from southern Kenya — the terrain is stark, beautiful, and home to species found nowhere else. Reticulated giraffes with their geometric coat patterns browse the scattered acacias, and you may spot your first gerenuk — the 'giraffe gazelle' — standing on its hind legs to reach high branches. Elephants lumber down to the river to drink as the afternoon light turns the landscape copper.
Full Day Samburu
6:00 AM. A full day exploring Samburu's unique ecosystem. The morning drive follows the Ewaso Ng'iro River, the lifeline of this semi-arid reserve. Elephants emerge from the riverine doum palms to cross to the opposite bank, sending spray cascading in the early light. Crocodiles bask on sandy banks while herds of Grevy's zebra — distinguishable by their narrow, elegant stripes — graze the dry grassland beyond. Your guide tracks the famous 'Samburu Special Five': Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx (with their striking face markings and rapier-straight horns), and the blue-legged Somali ostrich. Leopards are frequently sighted along the riverbanks, often draped over a branch with a kill. After a bush picnic lunch, the afternoon drive explores the northern sector where large herds of elephant gather beneath Koitogor Hill. Visit a Samburu community to learn about their pastoralist culture — vibrant beadwork, traditional songs, and a way of life closely tied to the land. Return to your lodge as the sun sets over the dramatic landscape.
Samburu — Second Day
6:30 AM. Your second full day in Samburu explores different terrain. The morning drive takes you east, deeper into the reserve where the land rises into rocky hillocks and the vegetation thins to sparse thornbush. This is excellent territory for cheetahs, who use the open ground for their explosive sprints. Oryx herds stand stoically in the dry heat, their long horns catching the morning light. Vulturine guineafowl — arguably Africa's most beautiful bird — scuttle through the scrub in iridescent blue-and-white plumage. By mid-morning, your guide follows the river upstream where the density of wildlife increases around the permanent water. Herds of impala, Grant's gazelle, and dik-dik scatter as a martial eagle circles overhead. The afternoon drive returns to the riverbanks for the golden hour — elephants silhouetted against the fading light, hippos surfacing with great splashes, and the calls of go-away birds echoing through the doum palms. Samburu's isolation means fewer vehicles and a deeper sense of wilderness than Kenya's more visited parks.
Samburu to Masai Mara
7:00 AM. After breakfast, check out of your Samburu lodge and begin the long drive south toward the Masai Mara — an epic cross-country journey of approximately eight to nine hours that traverses some of Kenya's most varied landscapes. The route takes you back through the semi-arid north, climbing through Isiolo and the Laikipia Plateau. You cross the equator again, descend through the green central highlands, and skirt Nairobi before heading west toward Narok. The landscape shifts constantly — thornbush to forest to farmland to rolling Maasai grassland. Rest stops along the way break up the journey. By late afternoon you arrive at the Masai Mara — an entirely different world from Samburu's arid beauty. Here, the savannah rolls in golden waves to the horizon, and the density of wildlife is staggering. Check into your safari lodge, stretch your legs, and if time allows, enjoy a short evening drive. The contrast between Samburu's stark wilderness and the Mara's lush abundance makes each feel even more extraordinary.
Full Day Masai Mara
6:00 AM. Your first full day in the Mara starts with a dawn game drive — a world apart from Samburu. Here, the golden grassland stretches endlessly, and the concentration of predators is among the highest on Earth. Cheetahs perch on termite mounds scanning for Thomson's gazelle. Lion prides — sometimes fifteen or twenty strong — sprawl in the dappled shade. Your guide heads toward the Mara River, where hippos grunt in the murky pools and crocodiles line the banks like ancient sentinels. During the Great Migration (July–October), the river is the stage for the most dramatic wildlife crossings on the planet — wildebeest by the thousands plunging into the current. Enjoy a bush lunch, then spend the afternoon exploring the Mara Triangle — vast herds of buffalo, elegant topi on every rise, and perhaps a leopard draped across a sausage tree branch in the riverine forest. The birdlife is extraordinary too — lilac-breasted rollers, crowned cranes, and secretarybirds strutting through the grass.
Masai Mara — Second Full Day
6:00 AM. A second full day to explore deeper into the Mara's vast ecosystem. Your guide takes you to sectors you haven't visited — perhaps north toward the Musiara Marsh, where elephants drink at dawn and big cats hunt the marsh edges. Or south toward the Tanzanian border, where the rolling hills provide sweeping views of the endless Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Scan the kopjes — rocky outcrops — for lions using them as lookout points. The afternoon explores areas around seasonal watering holes where species converge — eland, hartebeest, waterbuck, and the predators shadowing them. An optional hot air balloon safari (extra cost) launches at dawn for a breathtaking aerial perspective over the migration herds and the snaking Mara River. An optional Maasai village visit offers a window into the vibrant culture of the people who have coexisted with this wildlife for centuries. Return for a final dinner at your lodge, reflecting on the extraordinary contrast between Samburu's northern frontier and the Mara's legendary plains.
Masai Mara to Nairobi
6:00 AM. One last early morning game drive to capture the Mara at its most magical — soft golden light streaming across the grasslands, the air cool and fresh, and the distant rumble of wildebeest herds on the move. Your guide targets any species you haven't yet encountered — perhaps a black rhino in the dense thickets or a serval cat hunting in the tall grass. Scan the riverbanks one final time for crocodiles basking in the warming sun and hippos yawning their territorial displays. By 9:00 AM, return to your lodge for breakfast and check out. The drive back to Nairobi follows the scenic route through Maasai country and the Great Rift Valley — approximately five to six hours. Red-earth roads give way to tarmac past Narok, and the Rift Valley escarpment provides one last panoramic viewpoint before the descent toward the capital. Arrive in Nairobi by late afternoon, approximately 4:00–5:00 PM, with drop-off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
