7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb | Lemosho Route Summit Trek
Kilimanjaro's Most Beautiful & Remote Approach
Widely regarded as Kilimanjaro's finest route — seven days of pristine wilderness and world-class mountain scenery. Begin on the remote western slopes where buffalo and elephants still roam the lower forest, cross the vast Shira Plateau beneath cathedral-like skies, and scramble up the iconic Barranco Wall. The Lemosho's gradual altitude gain delivers excellent acclimatization and a 90%+ summit success rate. Fewer crowds on the first two days create a true wilderness experience before you join the Southern Circuit for the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp (2,780m)
Drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro's western flank. Register and begin your trek through dense, primeval rainforest. This remote trail sees few climbers and is rich with wildlife — keep watch for blue monkeys, Colobus monkeys, and even forest elephants. Camp at Big Tree Camp in a forest clearing.
Big Tree Camp (2,780m) to Shira 1 Camp (3,505m)
Continue through the upper rainforest zone as it transitions to giant heather moorland. Emerge onto the western edge of the Shira Plateau — one of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones that collapsed millennia ago. Stunning views of Kibo peak ahead. Camp on the plateau's edge.
Shira 1 (3,505m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)
Cross the Shira Plateau — a high-altitude moorland unlike anywhere else on Earth. The plateau stretches for miles with endemic plants and sweeping views of the Western Breach. Optional acclimatization hike to Shira Cathedral. Camp at Shira 2 near the plateau's eastern edge.
Shira 2 (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m) via Lava Tower
Hike to the Lava Tower (4,630m) for key acclimatization — gain nearly 800m before descending back. The Lava Tower is a dramatic volcanic plug with superb views. Descend to the lush Barranco Valley with its forest of giant groundsel plants.
Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Scramble up the famous Barranco Wall — a thrilling, hands-on climb that is the most memorable moment on any Kilimanjaro route. Continue along the Southern Circuit with views of the glaciers above and the plains below. Reach Karanga Camp — the last water point.
Karanga (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m), then Summit Night to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)
Morning hike to Barafu base camp. Rest through the afternoon. At midnight, begin your summit push through volcanic scree under a blanket of stars. Reach Stella Point at dawn, then follow the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descend to Barafu, then continue to Mweka Camp.
Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate — Certificate Ceremony
Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Collect your summit certificate and tip your incredible mountain crew. Transfer to Moshi or Arusha for rest and celebration.
