Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve
6:00 AM — Your driver-guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel and you head west towards the Masai Mara. The drive takes roughly five hours, climbing through the fertile highlands before the landscape drops away at the Great Rift Valley escarpment — pause here for sweeping views of the valley floor stretching to the horizon far below, one of Earth's greatest geological features.
Descend through Narok town and continue across the Loita Plains into Maasai country, where herdsmen in red shukas walk alongside their cattle beneath an enormous sky. By late morning, the Mara's golden grasslands open before you — flat-topped acacia trees studding the savannah as far as you can see. Collect your packed lunch and enter the reserve for an extended afternoon game drive.
The Mara's wildlife density is staggering — wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson's gazelle blanket the plains while your guide tracks lions through the tall grass and watches for cheetah scanning from elevated termite mounds. Elephants browse the riverine forest, hippos grunt from the Mara River, and as the golden hour arrives, giraffe silhouettes against the blazing sunset create the image you've seen in every documentary — except now it's yours, live and breathtaking. Check into your safari lodge as darkness falls.
Full Day — Masai Mara National Reserve
6:00 AM — Rise before dawn when the Mara's predators are most active and the light is a soft gold across the savannah. Your guide reads the bush expertly, following fresh tracks through dew-damp grass and interpreting alarm calls from the plains game.
Drive to the Mara River — the ecosystem's lifeblood. Enormous Nile crocodiles lie motionless on the sandy banks, their stillness deceptive and terrifying. Hippo pods surface and submerge in the deeper pools, grunting territorial warnings that echo across the water. During migration season (July–October), this is where thousands of wildebeest hurl themselves across the current in one of nature's most dramatic spectacles.
Mid-morning, explore the Mara Triangle's rolling hills for exceptional visibility — topi stand sentinel on the ridgelines, hyena dens reveal playful cubs tumbling in the dust, and perhaps a leopard is spotted draped across a branch in the croton thickets. Return for lunch at your safari lodge.
The afternoon drive takes you to new sectors. Watch for a cheetah hunt unfolding across the open grasslands — the fastest land animal exploding into a blur of spotted gold — or a pride of lions teaching their cubs to stalk through the tall grass. The golden hour transforms the Mara into a photographer's paradise, every silhouette a masterpiece.
Masai Mara — Final Safari & Fly to Diani Beach
6:30 AM — Your final morning in the Mara. The cool dawn air carries the sounds of the bush waking up — weaver birds chattering, a fish eagle's sharp cry, and the distant whoop of hyenas returning from a night patrol. One last game drive through the golden light, and you may catch a lion pride still gathered around a night kill, or a cheetah stretching and setting out on her morning hunt.
An optional hot air balloon safari lifts you silently above the savannah at sunrise, the herds spreading below like a living carpet of wildebeest and zebra, followed by a champagne bush breakfast — an experience that stays with you forever.
Return to your safari lodge, pack up, and transfer to the Mara airstrip by late morning. The bush plane lifts off over the golden grasslands, offering a bird's-eye view of the winding Mara River and the vast reserve below. Fly to Wilson Airport in Nairobi, then connect to a domestic flight to Ukunda airstrip on the South Coast — total flying time roughly two hours.
Arrive at Diani Beach by mid-afternoon. The transition is instant and stunning — warm salt air, coconut palms swaying overhead, and the turquoise Indian Ocean sparkling in the late-day light. Check into your beach resort and let the rhythm of the waves take over. Sundowners on the beach as the sky turns gold over the ocean.
Diani Beach — Reef & Relaxation
Wake to the rhythm of waves and the calls of tropical birds in the palm canopy. Your first full day on Diani Beach — and the pace shifts to pure bliss. The powder-white coral sand stretches endlessly, lapped by bath-warm turquoise water so clear the fish are visible from the shore.
Spend the morning swimming, snorkelling along the reef just offshore — parrotfish, angelfish, moray eels, and green sea turtles glide through crystal-clear warm water — or simply relaxing under a palm tree. After a leisurely lunch, try a glass-bottom boat ride over the coral reef, stand-up paddleboarding in the calm lagoon, or visit the Colobus Conservation Centre to see endangered black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the coastal forest canopy.
As evening falls, enjoy fresh seafood as the sun sets over the palm-lined shore and the warm ocean breeze carries the scent of frangipani. The contrast with yesterday's dusty savannah could not be more perfect.
Diani Beach — Ocean Adventures
Another day of Indian Ocean bliss with options for every taste. Diani is one of East Africa's premier kitesurfing destinations, and you can also try deep-sea fishing in the Pemba Channel where marlin, sailfish, and tuna run, or explore the underwater world on a scuba diving excursion.
Consider a sunset dhow cruise along the coast — sailing on a traditional wooden vessel as the sky turns gold over the Indian Ocean is pure magic. Or for a half-day adventure, visit the Shimba Hills National Reserve — barely forty-five minutes from Diani. This lush coastal rainforest shelters Kenya's only population of the magnificent sable antelope, forest elephants, and the beautiful Sheldrick Falls cascading through dense tropical vegetation.
Return to your resort by mid-afternoon for pool time and beach relaxation. As evening approaches, the warm Indian Ocean breeze, fresh seafood, and the sound of waves create another perfect coastal evening.
Diani Beach — Wasini Island & Marine Park
An optional full-day trip to Wasini Island and Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park — one of East Africa's finest marine experiences. Depart by mid-morning for the short drive south to Shimoni, a sleepy fishing village on the coast. Board a traditional dhow and sail across the turquoise channel, watching for pods of bottlenose and spinner dolphins that frequent these waters year-round — sightings are virtually guaranteed.
At Kisite Marine Park, snorkel among pristine coral gardens teeming with tropical fish — butterflyfish, lionfish, parrotfish, and blue-spotted rays — in crystal-clear visibility. A Swahili seafood feast on Wasini Island — fresh crab, grilled fish, coconut rice, and chapati — is served under the shade of mangrove trees by the water's edge while the ocean laps at your feet.
Return to Diani by late afternoon, salt-crusted and sun-warmed. Or simply spend the entire day at your resort — every hour on Diani's white sand is time magnificently spent.
Diani Beach — Departure
Your final morning on the Kenyan coast. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with ocean views and a last barefoot walk along Diani's white sand, watching local fishermen launch their dhows into the morning tide. Depending on your departure schedule, you may have time for a final swim or a browse through the local beach markets for Swahili spices, kikoy fabrics, or carved soapstone souvenirs.
Transfer to Ukunda airstrip for your flight to Nairobi, or to Moi International Airport in Mombasa for your onward journey. Look back on seven remarkable days — from the lion-filled grasslands and dramatic river crossings of the Masai Mara to the tropical turquoise paradise of the Indian Ocean. Bush and beach, perfectly combined.
