Safari Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Masai Mara
6:00 AM. Your driver-guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel and you head west towards the Masai Mara. The drive takes approximately five to six hours, climbing through the lush highlands before reaching the Great Rift Valley escarpment — pause for dramatic views of the valley floor far below. Descend through Narok town and cross the wheat fields of the Loita Plains into Maasai country, where herdsmen in red shukas walk alongside their cattle. By late morning, the landscape transforms into the Mara's endless golden savannah. Collect your packed lunch and enter the reserve for an extended afternoon game drive. The Mara delivers immediately — vast herds of wildebeest and zebra sweep across the plains, lions doze beneath flat-topped acacia trees, and cheetahs scan the grasslands from elevated termite mounds. Check into your safari lodge as the sunset paints the sky above the reserve.
Full Day Masai Mara
A full day in the Masai Mara — every game drive here is an event. Rise at 6:00 AM for an early drive when predators are most active, the air cool and the light a soft gold across the grasslands. Your guide follows fresh tracks, navigating towards the Mara River where massive Nile crocodiles bask on sandy banks and hippo pods crowd the pools. During migration season, the river crossings are one of nature's greatest spectacles. Explore the Mara Triangle's rolling hills for exceptional visibility, spotting elephants in the riverine forest, topi on the ridgelines, and hyena dens where cubs play outside their burrows. Return for lunch at your lodge, then head out to different sectors in the afternoon. Watch for leopard in the croton thickets along the Talek River, and as dusk approaches, enjoy the golden-hour magic of giraffe silhouettes against the enormous African sky.
Masai Mara — Final Game Drive
Your final morning in the Mara. Rise early for one last game drive at 6:30 AM — perhaps an optional hot air balloon safari at dawn, floating silently above the herds as the savannah stretches endlessly below, followed by a champagne bush breakfast. Return to your lodge, pack up, and enjoy lunch before transferring to the Mara airstrip. The bush plane lifts off over the golden grasslands, offering a bird's-eye perspective of the herds, the winding Mara River, and the vast reserve shrinking below. Fly to Wilson Airport in Nairobi, where you connect to a domestic flight to Ukunda airstrip on the South Coast. The total flying time is roughly two hours. Arrive at Diani Beach by late afternoon and transfer to your beach resort. The contrast is instant — warm ocean air, white sand, and the turquoise Indian Ocean sparkling in the late-day light. Sundowners on the beach.
Fly to Diani Beach
Your first full morning on Diani Beach — and the pace shifts completely. Wake to the rhythm of waves and the calls of tropical birds in the palm canopy overhead. The powder-white coral sand stretches endlessly in both directions, lapped by the warm turquoise Indian Ocean. Spend the morning swimming, snorkelling along the reef just offshore, or simply relaxing under a palm tree with a fresh coconut. The underwater world here is spectacular — parrotfish, angelfish, moray eels, and green sea turtles glide through crystal-clear warm water. In the afternoon, explore Diani's offerings: a glass-bottom boat ride over the coral reef, a visit to the Colobus Conservation Centre to see endangered black-and-white colobus monkeys in the coastal forest, or a sunset beach walk along the shore. Fresh seafood and ocean breezes make for perfect evenings.
Diani Beach — At Leisure
Another day of Indian Ocean bliss. For the adventurous, Diani offers world-class kitesurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and deep-sea fishing — the Pemba Channel offshore holds marlin, sailfish, and yellowfin tuna. Alternatively, spend the morning on the beach before heading to the Shimba Hills National Reserve for a half-day excursion — just an hour from Diani, this lush coastal rainforest is home to Kenya's only population of sable antelope, plus elephants, leopards, and the beautiful Sheldrick Falls tumbling through dense tropical vegetation. Return to your resort by mid-afternoon for pool time and relaxation. As evening falls, consider a sunset dhow cruise along the coast — sailing on a traditional wooden vessel as the sky turns gold and pink over the Indian Ocean.
Diani Beach — At Leisure
An optional full-day trip to Wasini Island and Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park — one of East Africa's finest marine experiences. Drive south to the fishing village of Shimoni and board a traditional dhow that sails across the turquoise channel. Watch for pods of bottlenose and spinner dolphins surfacing alongside the boat — sightings are common year-round. At Kisite Marine Park, snorkel above pristine coral gardens alive with tropical fish, sea urchins, and starfish in crystal-clear visibility. A Swahili seafood lunch on Wasini Island — crab, grilled fish, coconut rice — is served under the shade of mangrove trees while the ocean laps at your feet. Return to Diani by late afternoon, sun-kissed and salt-crusted. Alternatively, spend the day at your resort — every day on Diani's white sand feels like a gift.
Diani to Nairobi — Departure
Your final morning on the Kenyan coast. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with ocean views and a last barefoot walk along Diani's white sand, watching local fishermen launch their dhows into the morning tide. Depending on your departure schedule, you may have time for a final swim or a quick browse through the local beach markets for Swahili spices, kikoy fabrics, or carved soapstone souvenirs. Transfer to Ukunda airstrip for your flight to Nairobi, or to Moi International Airport in Mombasa for your onward journey. Look back on seven remarkable days — from the lion-filled grasslands and dramatic river crossings of the Masai Mara to the tropical turquoise paradise of the Indian Ocean. Bush and beach, perfectly combined.
