Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

6:00 AM. Your guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel and you head south through the open Athi Plains, passing Maasai herders guiding their cattle through the morning mist. The four-hour drive to Amboseli National Park passes quickly as the landscape transforms from urban sprawl to dry savannah, with Mount Kilimanjaro gradually revealing its snow-capped summit through the clouds ahead. After checking into your safari lodge for lunch, the afternoon game drive begins. Amboseli's vast open plains make wildlife easy to spot — enormous elephant herds, some with tiny calves tucked between their mothers' legs, move across the dusty flats. Lions doze in the shade of acacia scrub while secretary birds stalk through the short grass, all framed against Kilimanjaro's towering silhouette glowing in the late afternoon light.

Day 2

Full Day Amboseli Game Drives

5:30 AM. An early start rewards you with Kilimanjaro completely cloud-free — its glaciers catching the first golden rays while the plains below are still cool and quiet. Elephants emerge from the morning haze in great herds, their rumbles carrying across the stillness. Your guide navigates toward the Enkongo Narok swamps where hippos wallow, pelicans fish in the shallows, and jacanas step delicately across lily pads. Midmorning, you climb Observation Hill for breathtaking 360-degree views of the dried lake bed, the green wetland ribbons, and Kilimanjaro dominating the horizon. Back at the lodge for lunch and a midday rest. The afternoon drive explores different sectors — perhaps the southern plains where cheetahs hunt Thomson's gazelles, or the palm groves alive with superb starlings and weaverbirds building their intricate nests.

Day 3

Amboseli to Arusha via Namanga Border

7:00 AM. After breakfast, you leave Amboseli and drive south toward the Kenya-Tanzania border at Namanga, roughly two hours away. The crossing is smooth — your guide handles the paperwork while you watch the lively border-town bustle of traders, fruit sellers, and Maasai women in beaded jewelry. Once through immigration, you continue another two hours south to Arusha, Tanzania's safari capital, arriving by early afternoon. The town sits at the base of Mount Meru, its streets lined with jacaranda trees and buzzing with safari vehicles preparing for the northern circuit. You check into your lodge and enjoy a relaxed afternoon — the perfect pause between two countries and very different landscapes ahead.

Day 4

Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park

7:00 AM. You depart Arusha and drive west along the floor of the Great Rift Valley toward Lake Manyara National Park, roughly two hours away. The park sits beneath a dramatic 600-meter escarpment — its western wall dropping sheer into lush groundwater forest alive with blue monkeys, olive baboons, and hornbills. You enter the park and your guide navigates through the forest canopy into open grassland along the lakeshore. Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions — one of only two populations in Africa — and your guide scans the mahogany branches carefully. Herds of elephants wander the woodland, buffalo graze near the lake edge, and thousands of flamingos create a shimmering pink band along the alkaline waters. The birding here is exceptional — over 400 species have been recorded.

Day 5

Lake Manyara to Ngorongoro Crater

6:30 AM. Today brings the highlight of your Tanzania safari. You drive from Lake Manyara up through the forested highlands to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, climbing steadily until the crater rim appears at 2,200 meters. Your first view of the caldera is unforgettable — a vast bowl stretching 19 kilometers across, with Lake Magadi glinting at its center and thousands of animals visible as moving dots on the green floor below. Your vehicle descends 600 meters down the steep track into this natural amphitheatre. The wildlife density is extraordinary: prides of lions rest in the open, elephants browse near the Lerai Forest, buffalo herds number in the hundreds, and your guide tracks the elusive black rhino through binoculars. Flamingos crowd the soda lake. You enjoy a picnic lunch beside a hippo pool before continuing to explore the crater until late afternoon.

Day 6

Ngorongoro to Arusha — Departure

6:00 AM. You descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a final early morning game drive — the golden light raking low across the caldera floor makes this the most magical hour for wildlife viewing and photography. Lions are often on the move at dawn, and hyenas return from their nighttime hunts. Your guide covers new areas of the crater, perhaps the Gorigor Swamp where elephants gather and crowned cranes pick through the marsh grass. By mid-morning, you ascend the crater wall and pause at the rim for one last sweeping view of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The three-hour drive back to Arusha passes through green highland farmland and Maasai pastoral land. You arrive in Arusha by early afternoon for your departure or transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport.
