5-Day Tanzania Wildlife Safari | Serengeti & Ngorongoro
Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Tarangire
Tanzania's legendary Northern Circuit in five extraordinary days — from the elephant-studded woodlands of Tarangire to the endless Serengeti plains and down into the Ngorongoro Crater, often called the Garden of Eden. Expect dense concentrations of predators and prey on the Serengeti's golden grasslands, the chance to witness the Great Migration's thundering herds, and a descent into the world's largest intact volcanic caldera where lion, rhino, and flamingo-fringed lakes await. Ancient baobab trees, vast horizons, and wildlife density that defies belief. This is Tanzania at its absolute best.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arusha to Tarangire
7:00 AM. Your guide picks you up from your Arusha hotel and you set off south toward Tarangire National Park. The two-hour drive takes you through the dry Maasai steppe, where flat-topped acacia trees punctuate the golden grasslands and distant mountains shimmer in the morning haze. Enter the park and the landscape immediately captivates — colossal baobab trees, some well over a thousand years old, dominate the horizon with their gnarled, silver-grey trunks. Tarangire's elephant herds are legendary: you'll encounter large breeding groups along the Tarangire River, calves playing in the dust while matriarchs keep a watchful eye. Lions doze in the shade, giraffes browse the treetops, and the birdlife is exceptional — lilac-breasted rollers flash electric blue against the dry bush, and martial eagles circle overhead. Enjoy a packed lunch under the canopy, then continue your afternoon game drive before settling into your safari camp as the sun sets behind the baobab silhouettes.
Tarangire to Serengeti
After breakfast, depart Tarangire and drive northwest toward the Serengeti. The route climbs through the Ngorongoro highlands — coffee plantations, Iraqw villages, and misty montane forest line the road. Pause at the Ngorongoro crater rim viewpoint for a staggering panorama of the caldera, then continue descending into the Serengeti's eastern gateway. As you cross through the Naabi Hill Gate, the world opens up — the Serengeti's endless plains stretch to the horizon, the grass rippling like an ocean in the wind. Wildebeest and zebra graze in staggering numbers, and the afternoon game drive begins as you push deeper into the park. Topi stand alert on termite mounds, hartebeest trot along dusty tracks, and your guide follows the circling vultures to locate a lion pride resting after a successful hunt. Check into your Serengeti camp as the vast sky turns from gold to deep crimson.
Full Day Serengeti
6:00 AM. A full day exploring the Serengeti's diverse ecosystems. The early morning drive follows the Seronera River — the park's predator corridor, where lions, leopards, and cheetahs concentrate thanks to the permanent water and dense riverine vegetation. Leopards are often spotted draped over the thick branches of sausage trees, their kills hoisted above the reach of hyenas. Head out to the open plains where cheetahs make their explosive hunts, using termite mounds as lookout posts. The rocky kopjes scattered across the Serengeti are islands of life — lions climb them for better views, agama lizards display their bright orange heads, and hyraxes bask on the warm granite. Enjoy a bush lunch with views across the plains, then explore different sectors in the afternoon. During migration season, the moving columns of wildebeest are one of nature's most humbling sights — an endless river of animals stretching to the horizon. Return to camp under a sky ablaze with stars.
Serengeti to Ngorongoro
Rise for an early morning game drive in the Serengeti — dawn is when the magic happens. The golden light catches the dew on the grass, and predators are on the move after the cool of night. By 9:00 AM, begin the three-hour drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, climbing from the Serengeti floor back into the misty highlands. Stop at the crater rim for lunch and gaze down into the caldera — a 20-kilometre-wide bowl of green grassland, forest patches, and the gleaming soda lake. After lunch, wind down the steep descent road into the crater. The wildlife density on the floor is extraordinary: lion prides rest near the marsh, elephants amble through the open plains, buffalo herds number in the hundreds, and the elusive black rhino can sometimes be spotted in the scrubland. Flamingos form a vivid pink fringe along Lake Magadi. An optional Maasai village visit in the conservation area offers a window into one of Africa's most iconic pastoral cultures. Ascend at dusk and check into your lodge on the cool, cloud-kissed rim.
Ngorongoro Crater & Return
6:00 AM. Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a final dawn game drive. The morning mist drifts across the crater floor, the walls rising steeply on all sides — it feels like entering a lost world. Spotted hyenas lope back to their dens, lions yawn and stretch after the night's hunt, and crowned cranes wade through the marshes with elegant, deliberate steps. Visit the hippo pool, where the deep bellowing of hippos reverberates across the water. Scan the open grassland carefully for black rhinos — the crater is one of Africa's best locations to see them. By mid-morning, take one last panoramic look at this natural amphitheatre, then ascend the rim and begin the drive back to Arusha. The three-hour journey passes through highland forest and farmland, arriving by early afternoon. Your guide drops you at your hotel or the airport, with five days of unforgettable Tanzanian wilderness behind you.
