Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

7:00 AM. Depart Arusha and head south toward Tarangire National Park — a scenic two-hour drive through the dry Maasai steppe, where termite mounds dot the landscape and Maasai bomas are visible from the road. At the park gate, the landscape transforms immediately: ancient baobab trees, their massive trunks swollen with stored water, tower over the golden grasslands. Tarangire holds the highest elephant density in Tanzania, and you'll encounter large herds almost immediately — mothers guiding tiny calves toward the river, bulls dust-bathing in the red earth. The Tarangire River is the park's lifeline, drawing vast concentrations of wildlife during the dry season. Lions rest in the shade of baobabs, giraffes stretch for high branches, and the birdlife is extraordinary — over 550 species, from giant ground hornbills striding through the grass to vivid bee-eaters darting along the riverbanks. Enjoy a packed lunch in the park and continue your game drive through the afternoon before settling into your safari lodge.

Day 2

Tarangire to Serengeti via Ngorongoro

After an early breakfast, leave Tarangire and drive northwest through the Rift Valley. The landscape shifts as you climb — dry savannah gives way to green farmland around Karatu, then to the misty montane forests of the Ngorongoro highlands. Continue through the conservation area, pausing at the crater rim for a jaw-dropping view of the caldera below, then descend to the Serengeti side. The terrain flattens dramatically as you enter the short-grass plains — vast, treeless expanses stretching to every horizon. By early afternoon, you pass through the Naabi Hill Gate and the Serengeti unfolds before you. Wildebeest and zebra graze in enormous herds, topi stand like sentinels on termite mounds, and your guide spots a pride of lions resting beneath a lone acacia. Check into your safari camp and enjoy an afternoon game drive as the warm golden light transforms the plains into a photographer's paradise.

Day 3

Full Day Serengeti

6:00 AM. A full day in the Serengeti — the greatest wildlife arena on Earth. The dawn drive heads toward the Seronera Valley, where the river's green corridor cuts through the dry plains, attracting the highest concentration of predators in Africa. Lions lounge on the warm rocks along the riverbank, leopards drape themselves in the branches of sausage trees, and cheetahs scan the open grasslands from termite-mound lookouts. Explore the rocky kopjes — ancient granite outcrops that rise from the plains like islands, providing shelter and vantage points for lions and klipspringers alike. During the Great Migration season, the plains come alive with two million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra in an endless, moving column. Enjoy a packed bush lunch, then spend the afternoon exploring different sectors — the Western Corridor, the central Seronera area, or the vast southern plains, depending on where the wildlife action is richest. Return to camp under a sky streaked with the colours of an African sunset.

Day 4

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

Rise early for a final morning game drive in the Serengeti. The dawn light is soft and golden, and the predators are active — this is often when the most dramatic sightings occur. By 9:00 AM, begin the drive east toward the Ngorongoro Crater, crossing back through the Naabi Hill Gate and ascending into the highlands. The journey takes roughly three hours, and the change in landscape is striking — from endless open plains to green, forested highlands. After lunch at the crater rim, descend the steep, winding road 600 metres into the caldera. The crater floor is astonishing: a natural amphitheatre packed with 25,000 animals. Lion prides patrol near the freshwater marsh, bull elephants wander the open grassland, and the alkaline Lake Magadi shimmers with flamingos. Search for the crater's resident black rhinos — one of the best places in East Africa to spot this critically endangered species. Ascend as dusk falls and check into your lodge on the cool rim.

Day 5

Ngorongoro — Morning Drive, Return to Arusha

6:00 AM. Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater one last time for a dawn game drive. The morning mist clings to the crater walls and the air is cool and fresh at this altitude. Hyenas return from the night's hunt, spotted and striped, while lions stretch in the dewy grass. Visit the hippo pool, where dozens of hippos crowd the water, their deep grunts echoing across the crater floor. Crowned cranes step delicately through the marshes, and jackals trot along the tracks. By mid-morning, take a final look across this extraordinary natural wonder — one last sweep of the binoculars across the vast caldera floor — then ascend the rim and begin the three-hour drive back to Arusha. Arrive by early afternoon, with the memories of five extraordinary days across Tanzania's finest wildlife destinations.
