Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

~270km | Approx. 5.5 hrs

6:00 AM — Your C.A.T.S driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel and heads west. The city gives way to fertile farmlands, then suddenly the earth drops away — the Great Rift Valley escarpment unfolds before you, a vast geological wonder stretching to the horizon. Pause at the viewpoint to take it all in.

Descend through Narok town — the last major settlement before the Mara — and continue across the wheat fields and Loita Plains into Maasai country. Herdsmen wrapped in colourful shukas watch over their cattle as dust rises from the unpaved road. By late morning, the landscape opens into the Mara's endless golden grasslands dotted with flat-topped acacia trees — the quintessential African savannah.

Enjoy lunch at your safari lodge, then set out for an afternoon game drive. The Mara's wildlife density hits you immediately — vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson's gazelle blanket the plains, while your guide tracks lions through the tall grass. Watch for cheetah scanning from termite mounds, leopard draped across sausage tree branches, and massive hippo pods in the muddy Mara River pools. The sun sets over the savannah in a blaze of copper and orange, silhouetting giraffes against the enormous African sky.

Day 2

Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

6:00 AM — Rise when predators are most active and the light is soft gold across the savannah. Your guide reads the bush expertly, following fresh tracks and animal behaviour — this morning could bring anything from a cheetah hunt unfolding at speed across the open grasslands to a leopard descending a fig tree with its overnight kill.

Drive to the Mara River where enormous Nile crocodiles bask on the banks and hippo pods dominate the pools. During migration season (July–October), the wildebeest river crossings here are one of nature's most dramatic spectacles — thousands plunging into the churning water while crocodiles strike. Explore the Mara Triangle's rolling hills, spotting elephants in the riverine forest, topi standing sentinel on the ridgelines, and playful hyena cubs tumbling outside their dens.

Return for lunch at your lodge during the midday heat. The afternoon drive takes you to new sectors — perhaps tracking a lion pride through the golden grass, watching a mother cheetah train her cubs to hunt, or finding a tower of giraffes silhouetted against the burning orange sky as the golden hour light transforms the savannah into a photographer's paradise.

Day 3

Masai Mara to Amboseli National Park

~380km | Approx. 6.5 hrs

6:00 AM — A final dawn game drive in the Mara — the cool morning air carries the sounds of the bush waking up. You may catch a lion pride returning from a night hunt or spot a cheetah already scanning for breakfast from a termite mound.

After breakfast, bid farewell to the Mara and begin the scenic drive south towards Amboseli. The route takes you back through the Rift Valley and south through Maasai rangelands — vast, sparsely populated grasslands where traditional Maasai homesteads (manyattas) dot the landscape and cattle outnumber people. It's a long drive but endlessly fascinating — the scenery shifts from golden savannah to scrubby bushland, and your guide points out wildlife along the way.

As you approach Amboseli in the late afternoon, Mount Kilimanjaro begins to dominate the southern horizon — Africa's highest peak rising above the plains with its glacial crown catching the last light of the day. Check into your lodge and head out for an evening game drive through the swamplands where Amboseli's legendary elephant herds gather. Watch family groups silhouetted against Kilimanjaro's purple evening profile — matriarchs with enormous tusks leading their herds through the golden grass. The sense of scale is humbling: enormous elephants dwarfed by an even more enormous mountain.

🍽️ Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4

Amboseli to Tsavo East National Park

~250km | Approx. 4.5 hrs

5:30 AM — Rise before dawn for Amboseli's finest moment — the mountain reveals itself fully in the early morning, its snowcap glowing pink then gold as sunrise light strikes the glaciers. Elephants are already moving between the swamps, their breath visible in the cool air.

A morning game drive takes you across the dried lake beds and through the papyrus swamps — this is the hour for photography, with Kilimanjaro's full profile reflected in still water and elephant herds painted in warm dawn light. Climb Observation Hill for a farewell panorama: the entire park spreads below, from green swampland to the vast pale lake bed, with Kilimanjaro presiding over it all.

After breakfast, depart east towards Tsavo East National Park. The landscape shifts from Amboseli's open grasslands through the Chyulu Hills corridor — rolling volcanic hills carpeted in green — before flattening into Tsavo's vast red-earth savannah. Arrive by early afternoon.

An afternoon game drive introduces you to Tsavo's legendary red elephants — enormous herds dust-bathing in the iron-rich laterite soil until their hides glow rust-red. Visit Aruba Dam, a wildlife magnet where buffalo, zebra, and giraffe converge, and drive along the Galana River where crocodiles bask on sandy banks. The enormous Tsavo sky turns gold at sunset — a fitting farewell to your final safari evening.

🍽️ Meals:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5

Tsavo East to Diani Beach

5:30 AM — Rise for a final sunrise game drive through Tsavo East. The morning light turns the red soil golden — elephants head to water, giraffes browse the treetops, and martial eagles launch from their perches. Every moment in this vast wilderness feels like a private discovery.

After breakfast, your coastal transfer begins — and you have two exciting options:

**Option A: First Class SGR Madaraka Express** — Your guide drives you to Voi SGR Station, just outside the park. Board Kenya's modern high-speed train at 12:08 PM and settle into air-conditioned first-class comfort with large picture windows. As the Madaraka Express glides through Tsavo's vast wilderness, spot elephants, giraffes, and perhaps even big cats from your reclining seat — it's a game drive on rails. Snacks and refreshments are available on board. Arrive at Mombasa Terminus by 2:00 PM, where your C.A.T.S representative meets you for the scenic ~1.5-hour drive south to your Diani Beach hotel.

**Option B: Continue in Your 4×4** — Prefer the open road? Your guide drives you directly to the coast via the Mombasa Highway, watching the dry bushland gradually give way to tropical coastal lowlands — baobab trees replaced by coconut palms and mango orchards. Arrive at your Diani Beach resort by approximately 3:00 PM.

The transformation is extraordinary — from red-earth wilderness to white-sand paradise in a single afternoon. Five days that took you from the Mara's big cats to Kilimanjaro's elephants to the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.
