6:30 AM. You leave Arusha and drive west through lush highland farmland and coffee plantations toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, roughly three hours away. The road climbs steadily through misty forest until you reach the crater rim at 2,200 meters — and suddenly the entire caldera opens before you: a vast natural amphitheatre 260 square kilometers wide with a shimmering soda lake at its center.
