Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
6:00 AM — Your C.A.T.S driver-guide meets you at your Nairobi hotel. Load your bags into the 4×4 Land Cruiser and head south on the Namanga Road as the city falls behind. The highway cuts through the rolling Athi Plains — Maasai herdsmen in crimson shukas guide their cattle through the morning mist, and the open grasslands are dotted with zebra and the occasional giraffe.
By mid-morning, a snow-capped silhouette begins to materialize on the southern horizon — Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, rising 5,895 metres into the equatorial sky. The sight grows more commanding with every kilometre. Stop for a hearty breakfast en route at a local café before continuing south.
Arrive at Amboseli National Park by late morning and check into your safari lodge. After lunch, head out for your first afternoon game drive. Amboseli's open terrain delivers some of Africa's most dramatic wildlife viewing — enormous elephant herds parade across dried lake beds with Kilimanjaro filling the sky behind them, their great tusks almost touching the dusty ground. Navigate the papyrus-fringed swamps fed by the mountain's underground springs, where hippos surface lazily and crowned cranes pick through the shallows. As the golden afternoon light deepens, watch for lion prides settling beneath yellow-barked acacia trees and listen for the eerie call of the fish eagle echoing across the wetlands.
Full Day in Amboseli National Park
5:30 AM — Rise before dawn for the clearest Kilimanjaro views — the mountain reveals its full glacial crown in the early morning before clouds gather by mid-morning. Step outside and watch the peak glow rose-pink, then gold, as the first rays of equatorial sun strike the ice cap.
6:30 AM — Your morning game drive rolls through Amboseli's diverse landscapes: dried lake beds shimmering with heat haze where dust devils spiral skyward, green swamps alive with birdsong, and acacia woodland where weaverbirds construct their intricate hanging nests. This is elephant country like nowhere else — family groups of twenty or more move in slow procession, matriarchs with tusks sweeping the ground leading calves barely knee-high. The Kilimanjaro backdrop transforms every sighting into a postcard.
Climb Observation Hill for a sweeping 360-degree panorama — the entire park unfolds below you. Elephant herds trace dark lines across the pale lake bed, swamplands shimmer green to the west, and Kilimanjaro towers above it all, close enough to count its glaciers.
Return for lunch at your lodge. The afternoon drive explores the southern marshes where buffalo herds congregate in their hundreds, spotted hyenas lope across the plains, and the rare bat-eared fox peers from its burrow entrance. Over 400 bird species have been recorded here — look for martial eagles circling overhead and superb starlings flashing iridescent blue from the thornbush. As sunset paints the sky amber and violet, elephants silhouetted against Kilimanjaro's purple evening profile create one of Africa's most unforgettable scenes.
Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park
6:30 AM — A final early morning game drive through Amboseli as the mountain's snowcap catches the first light. Elephants are already moving between the swamps, their breath visible in the cool dawn air. Savour these last Kilimanjaro moments — the mountain is about to disappear behind you.
After breakfast, depart east towards Tsavo West National Park. The landscape transforms dramatically — Amboseli's flat, open grasslands give way to rolling volcanic hills draped in dense bush, with the blue silhouette of the Chyulu Hills on the northern horizon. Arrive by early afternoon.
Your first stop is Mzima Springs — one of Kenya's natural wonders. Crystal-clear water bubbles up from underground volcanic rivers at a rate of 250 million litres per day, creating transparent pools where you can watch hippos gliding gracefully beneath the surface through an underwater viewing chamber. Barbel fish dart between their legs, and vervet monkeys play in the fig trees overhead.
Continue to the Shetani Lava Flow — a haunting expanse of jet-black volcanic rock from eruptions just 200 years ago, standing in eerie contrast to the green bush surrounding it. The Maasai named it "Shetani" — devil — believing the lava was released from the underworld. An afternoon game drive takes you through the Ngulia Hills area, where the rhino sanctuary shelters Kenya's recovering black rhino population. Watch for leopard draped across rocky outcrops, lesser kudu in the thick riverine bush, and Verreaux's eagles soaring on thermals above the escarpment.
Tsavo West to Tsavo East National Park
6:30 AM — An early morning game drive through Tsavo West's rugged volcanic landscape. The morning light catches the rocky terrain in sharp relief — klipspringer balance impossibly on boulder faces, rock hyrax sunbathe at crevice entrances, and the lucky may spot a leopard retreating to its daytime hideout. Drive past Roaring Rocks viewpoint for sweeping panoramic views across the bush.
After breakfast, cross from Tsavo West into Tsavo East — Kenya's largest national park. The landscape opens dramatically into vast, flat savannah crossed by the rust-red Galana River. This is where you'll encounter Tsavo's legendary red elephants — enormous herds dust-bathing in the iron-rich laterite soil until their hides glow the colour of the earth itself. The sight of fifty red-dusted elephants moving across the crimson plains is pure Tsavo magic.
Visit Mudanda Rock — a massive whale-backed inselberg rising from the bush, with a natural dam at its base that draws hundreds of elephants during the dry season. The view from the top sweeps across miles of wilderness. Continue to Aruba Dam, another wildlife magnet where buffalo, zebra, giraffe, and waterbuck converge to drink while crocodiles patrol the shallows. Your guide follows the Galana River downstream towards Lugard Falls — not a waterfall but a series of bizarre, water-sculpted rock formations where the river forces through narrow channels carved over millennia. Hippos snort in the deeper pools and massive crocodiles sun themselves on the sandbanks.
An evening game drive along the Voi River circuit completes the day — watch for lion prides, gerenuk standing on hind legs to browse high acacia branches, and the dazzling lilac-breasted roller perched on every other bush.
Tsavo East to Diani Beach
5:30 AM — Rise for a final sunrise game drive through Tsavo East. The morning light turns the red soil golden, and the wildlife is active after the cool night — elephants heading to water, giraffes browsing the treetops, and martial eagles launching from their perches. Every moment in this vast wilderness feels like a private discovery.
After breakfast, your coastal transfer begins — and you have two exciting options:
**Option A: First Class SGR Madaraka Express** — Your guide drives you to Voi SGR Station, just outside the park. Board Kenya's modern high-speed train at 12:08 PM and settle into air-conditioned first-class comfort with large picture windows. As the Madaraka Express glides through Tsavo's vast wilderness, spot elephants, giraffes, and perhaps even big cats from your reclining seat — it's a game drive on rails. Snacks and refreshments are available on board. Arrive at Mombasa Terminus by 2:00 PM, where your C.A.T.S representative meets you for the scenic ~1.5-hour drive south to your Diani Beach hotel.
**Option B: Continue in Your 4×4** — Prefer the open road? Your guide drives you directly to the coast via the Mombasa Highway, passing through the Tsavo plains and into the lush tropical lowlands where baobab trees give way to coconut palms. Arrive at your Diani Beach resort by approximately 3:00 PM.
Either way, the transformation is extraordinary — from red-earth wilderness to white-sand paradise in a single afternoon. The warm Indian Ocean, swaying palms, and powder-soft sand welcome you to the coast.
