4-Day Lake Nakuru & Masai Mara Safari | Flamingos to Big Five
Lake Nakuru, Naivasha, Crescent Island & Masai Mara
From flamingo-pink lakeshores to lion country — this four-day journey traces Kenya's Rift Valley from its soda lakes to the legendary Masai Mara. Expect rhino sightings in Lake Nakuru's sanctuary, clouds of pink flamingos reflected in alkaline waters, and a boat ride on Lake Naivasha through hippo territory and fish eagle nesting sites. Then the Mara delivers its signature spectacle: Big Five encounters across sweeping savannah, leopards draped in sausage trees, and cheetahs scanning the golden grass. A birdwatcher's dream meets a big-game adventure.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Lake Nakuru
7:00 AM. Your driver-guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel and you head northwest toward Lake Nakuru in your private 4x4 safari vehicle. The road climbs through the escarpment and into the Great Rift Valley, offering wide views of the volcanic landscape that defines this region. Within three hours you reach Lake Nakuru National Park — a compact but wildlife-packed reserve ringed by fever-yellow acacia forest and rocky escarpments. Check in at your safari lodge for lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive. Nakuru is one of Kenya's premier rhino sanctuaries — both the massive white rhino and the more elusive hook-lipped black rhino roam here. Your guide navigates the lakeshore, where seasonal flamingo flocks paint the alkaline waters pink and pelicans glide in formation. Rothschild's giraffes — one of the rarest subspecies — browse the treetops, while waterbuck and defassa graze the open grassland. Climb to Baboon Cliff viewpoint for a panoramic vista of the entire lake basin spread below you, bordered by dense forest and the pale shimmer of the alkaline water.
Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha
7:00 AM. After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive through Nakuru's acacia woodland — scanning the branches for leopards who favor these dense forest patches. Then check out and drive south to Lake Naivasha, a quick one-hour transfer along the Rift Valley floor. Arrive at your lakeside hotel in time for lunch, then head to the jetty for a boat safari on the freshwater lake. Your boat glides past floating islands of papyrus as hippos surface nearby, their ears flicking water droplets in the afternoon light. Fish eagles perch in dead acacia trees overhanging the water, their distinctive call echoing across the lake. Pelicans, cormorants, and lily-trotters fill every available perch. After the boat ride, cross to Crescent Island for a walking safari — strolling among free-roaming giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and gazelles with no barriers between you and the wildlife. The volcanic outline of Mount Longonot rises in the distance. Return to your hotel for dinner.
Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara
7:00 AM. After an early breakfast, depart Lake Naivasha and drive southwest toward the Masai Mara — approximately four hours through the heart of Maasai country. The landscape shifts from the green Rift Valley lakeland to rolling grassland hills, where Maasai homesteads dot the ridgelines and herdsmen guide their livestock across the plains. The final stretch of red-earth road winds downhill, and then the Mara's vast golden savannah opens before you. Enter through the reserve gate and game viewing begins immediately — giraffe silhouettes against the big sky, zebra herds scatter and regroup, and topi stand sentinel on every termite mound. Check into your safari lodge for lunch, then head out for an extended afternoon game drive. Your guide navigates toward the Mara River corridor, where lion prides patrol the grassland and elephants move through the scattered woodland. The warm afternoon light makes for stunning photography as the sun arcs toward the Oloololo Escarpment.
Masai Mara to Nairobi
6:00 AM. Rise early for one last game drive in the Mara's golden dawn light — the finest hour in the African bush. Soft amber rays illuminate the dew-covered grassland as predators return from their nighttime hunts. Your guide targets the open plains where cheetahs are most active, and scans the riverine thickets for leopards. Hippos yawn in the Mara River shallows, displaying their massive jaws, while crocodiles slide silently off the banks. Herds of wildebeest and zebra are already on the move, their hooves drumming a low rhythm across the earth. By 9:00 AM, return to your lodge for a full breakfast and check out. The drive back to Nairobi retraces the scenic route through Maasai country and the Rift Valley — red-earth roads giving way to tarmac as the Mara's wildness fades behind you. Arrive in Nairobi by late afternoon, approximately 4:00–5:00 PM, with drop-off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
