4-Day Tanzania Safari | Serengeti & Ngorongoro Adventure

The Serengeti Plains Meet the Ngorongoro Crater

The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater — two names that define African safari — united in four unforgettable days. On the Serengeti's endless plains, expect lion prides sprawled in golden grass, cheetahs scanning from termite mounds, and vast herds of wildebeest and zebra enacting the Great Migration. Then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, where all Big Five roam a natural volcanic arena just 20 kilometres across. Leopards hide in fever tree canopy, hippos wallow in marshland pools, and the sheer density of wildlife rivals anywhere on Earth. Tanzania distilled to its absolute finest.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Serengeti National Park

~335km | Approx. 7 hrs

6:30 AM. Your guide collects you from your Arusha hotel for the long drive west to the Serengeti — Tanzania's most iconic park. The route takes you through Arusha town, past Maasai villages, and up into the Ngorongoro highlands. The landscape shifts from green farmland to misty montane forest as you climb. You'll pass through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, pausing briefly at the crater rim viewpoint for a stunning glimpse of the caldera far below. Continue descending through the short-grass plains, where Maasai herders graze their cattle alongside zebras and wildebeest. At the Naabi Hill Gate — the Serengeti's eastern entrance — the vast plains open before you, stretching to the horizon like a golden sea. By early afternoon, you're deep in the Serengeti, and the game viewing begins immediately: herds of wildebeest and zebra number in the thousands, giraffes browse the scattered acacia trees, and your guide scans for the telltale flick of a cheetah's tail in the grass. Check into your safari camp as the African sun sinks low over the endless plains.

Day 2

Full Day Serengeti

6:00 AM. A full day to explore the Serengeti — Africa's greatest wildlife stage. The early morning drive heads toward the Seronera River valley, the park's predator heartland. Lions are often spotted along the riverbanks, sprawled on warm rocks or watching herds from beneath sausage trees. Leopards favour the dense riverside vegetation, and your guide knows the favourite trees. The open plains beyond Seronera stretch endlessly, dotted with rocky kopjes — ancient granite outcrops where lions climb to survey their territory and hyraxes sun themselves on warm stone. Cheetahs hunt on these open flats, their explosive sprints one of nature's most thrilling spectacles. Enjoy a bush lunch under a shade tree, surrounded by the sounds of the savannah — birdsong, the distant grunt of wildebeest, the whisper of wind through dry grass. In the afternoon, explore a different sector: perhaps the Western Corridor near the Grumeti River, or the vast central plains where the Great Migration herds gather in their millions during the wet season. Return to camp as the sky turns orange and crimson.

Day 3

Serengeti to Ngorongoro

~145km | Approx. 3 hrs

Enjoy an early morning game drive in the Serengeti before breakfast — the dawn light casts a warm golden glow across the plains and predators are at their most active. By 9:00 AM, pack up and begin the drive east toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey takes roughly three hours, and the landscape gradually changes from open savannah to the grassy highlands around the crater. Arrive at the crater rim by lunchtime and take in the panoramic view — 260 square kilometres of wildlife paradise spread out 600 metres below. After lunch, descend the winding road into the caldera. The crater floor is one of the most wildlife-dense places on Earth: lion prides patrol the grasslands, massive bull elephants wander near the Lerai Forest, and herds of buffalo move like dark clouds across the plain. Search for the crater's famous black rhinos — among the most accessible wild rhino sightings in Africa. Flamingos fringe the shores of Lake Magadi in brilliant pink. Ascend at dusk and check into your lodge on the cool, misty crater rim.

Day 4

Ngorongoro — Morning Game Drive, Return to Arusha

~190km | Approx. 3.5 hrs

6:00 AM. One final descent into the Ngorongoro Crater for a dawn game drive — the early hours offer the best chance of spotting predators on the hunt. Hyenas trot back from the night's activities, lions are still on the move, and the morning mist clings to the crater walls, creating an almost otherworldly atmosphere. Spend two to three hours exploring areas you may have missed: the marshes where crowned cranes wade, the hippo pool alive with snorting, jostling hippos, or the open grasslands where cheetahs occasionally hunt. By mid-morning, ascend the crater rim for the last time and begin the three-hour drive back to Arusha. The route passes through the Ngorongoro highlands — cool air, green forests, and coffee plantations lining the road. Arrive in Arusha by early afternoon, where your guide drops you at your hotel or the airport for your onward travels.
