Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Tsavo East
6:00 AM. Depart Nairobi in your private 4x4 safari vehicle, heading southeast along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. The road descends from the cool highlands through the Athi Plains — open scrubland stretching to distant blue hills. Around the four-hour mark, you reach the Mtito Andei Gate and enter Tsavo East — Kenya's largest national park, a vast semi-arid wilderness of red soil, scrubby commiphora bushes, and endless skies. The scale here is immense, and the sense of wild isolation is palpable. Check into your safari lodge for lunch, then set off on an afternoon game drive. Tsavo East's most famous residents are its red-dusted elephants — enormous herds that coat themselves in the iron-rich laterite soil, turning a deep russet colour that makes them unmistakable. Your guide follows the Galana River, a green lifeline cutting through the dry landscape, where hippos wallow and crocodiles sun on the banks. Lion prides rest under scattered palms, and gerenuk stand on their hind legs to browse high acacia branches. Return to your lodge as the vast Tsavo sky turns orange at sunset.
Tsavo East to Tsavo West
6:30 AM. After breakfast, set out for a morning game drive along the Galana River toward Lugard Falls — dramatic rapids where the river forces through sculpted rock channels carved over millennia. Crocodiles gather in the pools below. Continue past Mudanda Rock, a massive inselberg that acts as a natural dam — during the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather at the waterhole beneath it. By late morning, transfer to Tsavo West — the landscape becomes hillier and greener with volcanic terrain replacing flat semi-arid plains. Check into your lodge for lunch, then head to Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water from Kilimanjaro's underground aquifers surfaces into deep pools. An underwater viewing chamber lets you watch hippos gliding through gin-clear water while barbel fish swirl around them. Nearby, visit the Shetani Lava Flow — a stark black volcanic landscape that Maasai legend says was the devil's work. Return for dinner as the evening chorus of birds fills the air.
Tsavo West to Nairobi
6:00 AM. Your final morning starts with an early game drive through Tsavo West's volcanic terrain — more varied and dramatic than its eastern twin. The hillier landscape hides leopards in rocky outcrops and supports denser vegetation where lesser kudu and bushbuck browse in the shadows. Your guide navigates toward Roaring Rocks viewpoint, where the wind whistling through the boulders gives the place its name and the panoramic views stretch across miles of untouched wilderness. Spot dik-dik darting between bushes and martial eagles soaring overhead. The birdlife in Tsavo West is exceptional — hornbills, starlings, and weaver birds add flashes of color to the thorny scrub. By 9:00 AM, return to your lodge for breakfast and check out. The drive back to Nairobi follows the Mombasa highway northward, climbing back into the highlands. Arrive in Nairobi by approximately 3:00–4:00 PM, with drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
