3-Day Tanzania Safari | Tarangire & Ngorongoro Crater
Tanzania's Big Five in Three Unforgettable Days
Two of Tanzania's greatest wildlife destinations packed into three extraordinary days. Expect massive elephant herds drifting beneath ancient baobab trees in Tarangire, then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater — a volcanic amphitheatre sheltering 25,000 animals including all Big Five. Black rhinos graze the crater floor, lion prides patrol the open grasslands, and flamingos paint the soda lake pink. Over 200 bird species across both parks reward every glance skyward. If your time is short but your wildlife ambitions are big, this compact Tanzania safari delivers far beyond its three days.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arusha to Tarangire National Park
7:00 AM. Your guide picks you up from your Arusha hotel and you head south toward Tarangire National Park. The two-hour drive passes through busy Arusha town, then into open Maasai steppe where flat-topped acacia trees dot the dry grasslands and Maasai herdsmen walk their cattle along dusty tracks. By mid-morning you reach the park gate, and the landscape transforms — ancient baobab trees, some over a thousand years old, rise from the golden savannah like sentinels. Tarangire is elephant country, and you'll see them almost immediately: large breeding herds moving along the Tarangire River, calves sheltering beneath their mothers in the midday heat. Enjoy a packed lunch in the shade of a massive baobab, then continue your afternoon game drive along the riverbanks where lions rest in the long grass, lesser kudu slip through the bush, and colourful lilac-breasted rollers dart between the branches. Over 550 bird species call this park home. Check into your safari lodge as the sun sets behind the baobabs.
Tarangire to Ngorongoro Crater
After an early breakfast, depart Tarangire and drive northwest toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — roughly three hours through the Rift Valley lowlands, climbing steadily as the terrain shifts from dry savannah to lush highland forest. The air cools noticeably as you ascend to the crater rim at 2,200 metres. Your first glimpse of the Ngorongoro Crater is unforgettable — a vast volcanic caldera stretching 20 kilometres across, its floor a patchwork of grassland, forest, and the shimmering alkaline Lake Magadi. After lunch at the rim, your vehicle descends the winding road 600 metres down to the crater floor. The wildlife density here is staggering: lion prides sprawl near the marsh, elephants browse through fever-tree woodland, buffalo herds darken the plains, and if you're fortunate, you'll spot one of the crater's critically endangered black rhinos grazing in the open. Flamingos line the lakeshore in brilliant pink. Ascend the crater in late afternoon and settle into your lodge on the misty rim.
Ngorongoro Crater — Morning Drive, Return to Arusha
6:00 AM. Descend once more into the crater for a dawn game drive — the golden morning light illuminates the caldera walls and the wildlife is at its most active. Hyenas return from the night's hunt, lions stretch and yawn in the dewy grass, and crowned cranes wade through the shallow marshes. Your guide focuses on areas you may have missed yesterday — perhaps the Lerai Forest, where elephants feed among tall yellow-barked acacia trees, or the hippo pool where dozens of hippos jostle and grunt in the muddy water. By mid-morning, take a final sweeping look across this natural amphitheatre — one of the most remarkable wildlife concentrations on Earth. Ascend the crater rim and begin the three-hour drive back to Arusha, arriving by early afternoon for your onward journey.
