Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

~230km | Approx. 4.5 hrs

6:00 AM — Your C.A.T.S driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel and heads south on the Namanga Road, with bottled water already chilled in the vehicle. The city falls away quickly as the road sweeps through the Athi River plains — look out for Maasai herdsmen in vivid red shukas walking their cattle through the early morning haze. Breakfast stop at a roadside café in the highlands, where fresh mandazi and Kenyan coffee fuel the journey ahead.

As you cross into Kajiado County, the landscape opens into vast golden grasslands and Africa's highest peak begins its dramatic reveal on the southern horizon — Mount Kilimanjaro, floating above the clouds like a snow-dusted mirage. Arrive at Amboseli National Park by late morning and check into your safari lodge in time for lunch.

By 2:00 PM you're out on your first game drive across the park's wide-open plains. Amboseli is home to over 1,500 elephants, and here they parade in family groups across the sun-baked lake bed with Kilimanjaro's glaciers as a breathtaking backdrop. Your guide navigates towards the Enkongo Narok swamp, where hippos surface lazily among the water lilies and crowned cranes pick through the shallows. Watch for lions dozing beneath yellow-barked acacia trees and giraffes browsing the woodland edges as golden afternoon light floods the savannah.

Day 2

Full Day in Amboseli

6:00 AM — Wake before dawn and step outside to witness Kilimanjaro in its full glory — the snow-capped summit often glows pink and gold in the first light before clouds veil it by mid-morning. By 6:30 AM you're out on a game drive through Amboseli's extraordinary mosaic of habitats: dried lake beds where dust devils spiral in the heat, papyrus swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's underground springs, and acacia woodland ringing with the calls of superb starlings and lilac-breasted rollers.

This is a photographer's paradise — elephants with enormous tusks walk in silhouette against the mountain's glaciers, and family herds splash through the marshes with calves tucked protectively between their mothers' legs. Around mid-morning, climb Observation Hill for a 360-degree panorama of the entire park — the emerald swamps, the shimmering lake bed, and on clear days, both Kilimanjaro and distant Mount Meru floating on the horizon.

Return to your lodge for lunch and a rest during the midday heat. By 4:00 PM, head out again through the southern marshes where buffalo herds gather in the hundreds, egrets wade through golden-lit shallows, and the setting sun paints the savannah in deep amber. Watch for spotted hyena emerging from their dens and bat-eared foxes twitching their oversized ears at the slightest sound.

Day 3

Amboseli to Diani Beach

~350km | Approx. 6 hrs

5:30 AM — A final sunrise game drive in Amboseli as Kilimanjaro's peak catches the first pink light of dawn. Elephants drift across the misty plains and the air is alive with birdsong. Soak in these last moments beneath Africa's tallest mountain — this is a sunrise you'll carry with you forever.

After breakfast at your lodge around 7:30 AM, you depart Amboseli and begin the journey towards Kenya's coast. The route takes you south-east through the Tsavo corridor, where the terrain shifts from open savannah to semi-arid bushland studded with ancient baobab trees and rust-red earth.

**Your Coastal Transfer — Two Great Options:**

**Option A: First Class SGR Madaraka Express** — Your guide drives you to Voi Station (~3 hours from Amboseli through the Tsavo corridor). Board the Madaraka Express at 12:08 PM and settle into air-conditioned first-class comfort with large picture windows as Kenya's modern train glides through Tsavo's vast wilderness. Spot elephants, giraffes, and perhaps even big cats from your reclining seat as the landscape rolls past. Arrive at Mombasa Terminus by 2:00 PM, where your C.A.T.S representative meets you for the scenic 1.5-hour drive south to your Diani Beach hotel. Toes in the sand by 4:00 PM.

**Option B: Continue in Your 4×4** — Prefer the open road? Your guide drives you directly to the coast via Voi and the Mombasa Highway, watching the vegetation transition from dry thornbush to lush tropical greenery as you approach the Indian Ocean. Cross the Likoni Ferry channel and arrive at your Diani Beach hotel by mid-afternoon. White coral sand, swaying palm trees, and the warm turquoise Indian Ocean — your bush-to-beach adventure is complete.
