Day-by-Day Itinerary
Fly Nairobi to Amboseli
8:00 AM. Check in at Wilson Airport, Nairobi, for the scenic 45-minute flight south to Amboseli. As the light aircraft crosses the Athi Plains and the Kilimanjaro foothills, the mountain itself rises spectacularly ahead — its snow-capped peak piercing the morning sky. You land at the Amboseli airstrip where your guide greets you, and even from the tarmac the first elephant herds are visible moving across the plains. A short drive brings you to your safari lodge where you settle in and enjoy lunch. The afternoon game drive takes you straight into the action. Huge herds of elephants — Amboseli hosts over 1,500 — cross the dusty savannah with Kilimanjaro as an ever-present backdrop. Your guide navigates toward the swamps where hippos wallow, pelicans fish in the shallows, and Egyptian geese crowd the banks. The golden evening light makes every sighting feel cinematic. Return to your lodge for dinner beneath a sky full of stars.
Amboseli Exploration
5:30 AM. A pre-dawn start gives you the best chance of seeing Kilimanjaro completely clear — its glaciers catching the first pink light while the plains below are still wrapped in cool morning mist. Elephant families move through the golden grass, their gentle rumbles the only sound in the stillness. Your guide drives toward Observation Hill, where you step out and climb to the summit for a breathtaking 360-degree panorama: the dried bed of Lake Amboseli, the green veins of the Enkongo Narok wetlands, and the immense mountain presiding over everything. Back in the vehicle, you explore the central plains where cheetahs are most active in the morning hours and secretary birds stalk through the short grass. Return for breakfast at your lodge, then rest during the midday heat. The afternoon brings a second game drive — your guide takes you to different sectors, perhaps where buffalo herds gather or where a pride of lions has been spotted near the swamp edge. An optional Maasai village visit offers insight into the traditional pastoral life of Amboseli's original inhabitants.
Return Flight to Nairobi
5:30 AM. Your final morning game drive captures Amboseli at its most peaceful. The air is fresh and cool, and the savannah hums with birdsong — martial eagles soaring above, superb starlings flashing blue from the acacia scrub. Your guide follows elephant pathways through the open plains, and with luck you'll encounter a breeding herd with tiny calves sheltered between their mothers' legs, all set against Kilimanjaro's towering profile. You explore any areas missed on previous drives, keeping an eye out for spotted hyenas, jackals, and the graceful gerenuk standing on hind legs to browse high branches. After a final, lingering look at the mountain reflected in the swamp waters, you return to your lodge for breakfast and check out. A short transfer to the airstrip and you board your return flight to Wilson Airport, watching the elephants shrink to specks on the plain below as the aircraft gains altitude. You're back in Nairobi by midday.
