2-Day Ngorongoro Crater Safari | Big Five Weekend Getaway
Descend into the World's Largest Volcanic Caldera for a Big Five Encounter
Two days dedicated to one of Africa's most spectacular natural wonders. Descend 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera — where approximately 25,000 large mammals live in a self-contained ecosystem. Black rhinos graze the open grasslands, lion prides patrol the crater floor, elephants move through the Lerai Forest, and flamingos paint Lake Magadi pink.
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arusha to Ngorongoro Crater Rim
7:00 AM. Depart Arusha and drive west through the lush highlands of Karatu, passing coffee plantations and Iraqw farming communities. The road climbs steadily toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate, where the air cools and the landscape shifts to montane forest thick with moss-draped trees and colourful turacos. After entering the conservation area, continue along the forested rim road to your lodge perched on the crater's edge. The first glimpse of the crater floor 600 metres below is breathtaking — a vast green amphitheatre dotted with lakes, forests, and open grassland stretching to the far wall. Settle into your lodge and enjoy lunch with one of the most extraordinary views on the continent. Afternoon at leisure to explore the rim trails, photograph the panorama, or simply absorb the scale of this geological wonder.
Ngorongoro Crater Floor Game Drive — Return to Arusha
6:00 AM. Early breakfast and descend the steep crater wall road into the caldera. The morning air is cool, mist clings to the crater walls, and the first golden light illuminates the grasslands. Within minutes of reaching the floor, the density of wildlife is astonishing. Herds of wildebeest and zebra graze the short grass alongside Grant's and Thomson's gazelles. Your guide tracks a pride of crater lions — these prides rarely leave the crater and are among the most-studied in Africa. Continue to the Mandusi Swamp, where hippos wallow in the murky water and crowned cranes stalk the reed beds. The Lerai Forest harbours old bull elephants with massive tusks, and this is one of your best chances in East Africa to spot the critically endangered black rhinoceros in the open. Drive past Lake Magadi, its alkaline waters alive with thousands of lesser flamingos. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site on the crater floor before ascending the western wall in the afternoon. Transfer back to Arusha, arriving by early evening.
