Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Diani Beach to Tsavo East & Tsavo West

~270km | Approx. 4.5 hrs total

6:00 AM — Your C.A.T.S driver-guide collects you from your Diani Beach hotel as the first light catches the Indian Ocean. Head north through the coastal hinterland — coconut palms and mango orchards give way to drier scrubland dotted with baobabs and termite mounds.

By 9:00 AM you reach Bachuma Gate and enter Tsavo East National Park — Kenya's largest protected area. The landscape transforms instantly into vast, rust-red savannah stretching to every horizon. Your first game drive begins immediately, and the famous red elephants of Tsavo appear — enormous herds dust-bathing in iron-rich laterite soil until their hides glow the colour of the earth itself.

Your guide follows the Galana River, its rust-coloured waters cutting through the crimson plains. Stop at Aruba Dam, where buffalo, waterbuck, and zebra jostle at the waterline while Nile crocodiles patrol the shallows and fish eagles scan from dead trees. Continue downstream toward Lugard Falls — not a waterfall but a series of bizarre, water-sculpted rock formations where the river forces through narrow channels carved over millennia. Massive crocodiles sun themselves on the sandbanks while hippos snort in the deeper pools.

After lunch, cross from Tsavo East into Tsavo West (~90km, ~1.5 hrs). The landscape transforms dramatically — flat red plains give way to rolling volcanic hills draped in dense bush, with the blue Chyulu Hills on the northern horizon. Arrive at Mzima Springs before sundown — one of Kenya's natural wonders. Crystal-clear water bubbles up from underground volcanic rivers at 250 million litres per day, creating transparent pools. Step into the underwater viewing chamber and watch hippos gliding gracefully beneath the surface, barbel fish darting between their legs, as vervet monkeys play in the fig trees overhead. Check into your safari lodge as the African bush settles into its evening chorus.

Day 2

Tsavo West National Park to Diani Beach

~250km | Approx. 4-5 hrs

5:30 AM — Rise for a dawn game drive through Tsavo West's rugged volcanic landscape. The morning light catches the rocky terrain in sharp relief — klipspringer balance impossibly on boulder faces, rock hyrax sunbathe at crevice entrances, and the lucky may spot a leopard retreating to its daytime hideout.

Your guide navigates past the Shetani Lava Flow — a haunting expanse of jet-black volcanic rock from eruptions just 200 years ago, standing in eerie contrast to the green bush surrounding it. The Maasai named it "Shetani" — devil — believing the lava was released from the underworld. The dark, twisted rock formations create an otherworldly landscape unlike anything else in Kenya.

Continue to the Ngulia Hills area, where the rhino sanctuary shelters Kenya's recovering black rhino population. Watch for lesser kudu in the thick riverine bush, buffalo grazing the open clearings, and Verreaux's eagles soaring on thermals above the escarpment. The rich birdlife includes hornbills, starlings, and the brilliant green wood hoopoe.

9:00 AM — Return to your lodge for a full breakfast surrounded by bush sounds. After checkout, your guide drives you south through the park, exiting via Mtito Andei Gate and picking up the Mombasa Highway. The landscape softens as you descend toward the coast — dry bushland giving way to mango orchards, sisal plantations, and finally the coconut palms and warm salt air of Diani.

Arrive back at your beach hotel by late afternoon — perfect timing for a sunset swim in the Indian Ocean. Two parks, two completely different ecosystems, and a lifetime of wildlife memories, all wrapped into a weekend escape from the coast.
