Day-by-Day Itinerary
Diani Beach to Tsavo East National Park
6:00 AM — Your C.A.T.S driver-guide collects you from your Diani Beach hotel. Load your bags into the 4×4 Land Cruiser and head north through the lush coastal hinterland — coconut palms and mango orchards give way to sisal plantations and scattered baobab trees as the Indian Ocean disappears behind you. The road climbs gently through Kwale County, passing small Digo villages where children wave from roadside stalls piled with tropical fruit.
By 9:00 AM you reach Bachuma Gate, the southeastern entrance to Tsavo East National Park — Kenya's largest protected area, a wilderness bigger than Wales. The landscape transforms instantly: flat, rust-red savannah stretches to every horizon, punctuated by lone baobabs and scattered commiphora scrub. This is raw, untamed Africa at its most dramatic.
Your first game drive begins immediately. Within minutes, the famous red elephants of Tsavo appear — enormous herds dust-bathing in the iron-rich laterite soil until their hides glow the colour of the earth itself. Watch a matriarch lead her family to water, calves tumbling between their mothers' legs, trunks swinging. Your guide follows the Galana River downstream — its rust-coloured waters cutting through the red plains, lined with doum palms where lesser kudu hide in the shadows.
Stop at Aruba Dam, one of Tsavo's premier wildlife magnets. Buffalo herds crowd the muddy banks, waterbuck stand chest-deep in the shallows, zebra jostle for drinking space, and Nile crocodiles drift like logs in the murky water. Overhead, fish eagles scan from dead trees and yellow-billed storks create a fluttering white canopy.
After lunch at your safari lodge, the afternoon game drive explores new circuits. Your guide tracks lion prides through the golden grass, scans termite mounds for cheetah, and watches for the elegant gerenuk — Tsavo's "giraffe gazelle" — standing on hind legs to browse high acacia branches. Giraffe move in slow motion against the enormous sky, and the dazzling lilac-breasted roller perches on every other bush. As the sun drops toward the horizon, the red earth turns molten gold and the African bush settles into its evening chorus of crickets and nightjars.
Tsavo East to Diani Beach
5:30 AM — Rise before dawn in the bush. The flat Tsavo horizon allows the sun to emerge as a perfect sphere, turning the sky from indigo to rose to gold in minutes. Head out for your dawn game drive while the air is still cool and the wildlife is most active — spotted hyenas trot back to their dens, jackals yip from the scrub, and secretary birds stalk through the grass on impossibly long legs.
Your guide drives to Lugard Falls — not a waterfall but a series of bizarre, water-sculpted rock formations where the Galana River forces through narrow channels carved over millennia. The smooth, swirling rock patterns are mesmerising, and massive Nile crocodiles sun themselves on the sandbanks while hippos snort in the deeper pools.
Continue to Mudanda Rock — a massive whale-backed inselberg rising 1.5 kilometres from the plains. Climb to the summit for a sweeping panorama that stretches to the horizon — below, a natural dam draws herds of elephants, zebra, and buffalo to drink in the early light. From this elevated vantage point, the scale of Tsavo's wilderness is humbling and awe-inspiring.
9:00 AM — Return to your lodge for a full breakfast, savouring the final sounds of the bush — wood smoke, dry grass, distant elephant rumbles. After checkout, your Land Cruiser exits through Bachuma Gate and heads southeast toward the coast. The landscape gradually greens as you descend toward the Indian Ocean — dry bushland giving way to sisal plantations, mango orchards, and finally the coconut palms and warm salt air of the coastal strip.
Arrive back at your Diani Beach hotel by early afternoon — the perfect time to swap safari boots for sandals and binoculars for a cold drink on the beach. The transition from red-earth wilderness to white-sand paradise takes barely three hours, yet feels like crossing between two entirely different worlds.
