Day-by-Day Itinerary
Nairobi to Amboseli
6:00 AM. Your driver-guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel and you set off south along the Namanga Road. The drive takes you through rolling farmlands and open savannah, with Mount Kilimanjaro gradually revealing itself on the southern horizon — its snow-capped peak shimmering above the morning haze. After roughly four hours, you arrive at Amboseli National Park and check into your safari lodge in time for lunch. By early afternoon you're out on your first game drive. The open plains stretch endlessly before you, dotted with dust devils and acacia scrub. Herds of elephants — Amboseli is home to over 1,500 — parade across the dried lake bed with Kilimanjaro filling the sky behind them. Your guide navigates to the Enkongo Narok swamp where hippos surface lazily and birdlife is prolific: martial eagles circle overhead while superb starlings flash iridescent blue from the bushes. As the golden afternoon light deepens, you may encounter a lion pride settling in for their evening rest. Return to your lodge for dinner as the African night sky fills with stars.
Amboseli to Nairobi
5:30 AM. An early start rewards you with Amboseli's best-kept secret — the clearest views of Kilimanjaro come at dawn, before clouds wrap the summit by mid-morning. Your guide drives you through the cool, golden light as the mountain glows pink and orange above the plains. Elephant families are already on the move, crossing between the swamps and open grassland, their red-dusted backs catching the first rays of sun. You climb Observation Hill for a sweeping panorama — the entire park spreads below you, from the green ribbons of swampland to the vast dried lake bed, with Kilimanjaro presiding over it all. Back in the vehicle, you explore the southern plains where cheetahs hunt in the short grass and jackals trot between zebra herds. After a late breakfast at your lodge, you check out and begin the drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the city by early afternoon with a packed lunch enjoyed along the way.
