About Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara National Reserve is Kenya's crown jewel and arguably the greatest wildlife destination on the African continent. Spanning 1,510 square kilometres of rolling savannah, acacia woodland, and riverine forest in southwestern Kenya, the Mara is the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem and hosts the dramatic climax of the Great Wildebeest Migration each year. From July to October, over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles pour across the Mara River in a life-and-death spectacle involving massive Nile crocodiles and powerful river currents — creating what many consider the single greatest wildlife event on Earth. But the Mara is spectacular year-round: its open grasslands support an extraordinary density of predators including an estimated 850 lions, over 200 cheetahs, and healthy leopard populations. The Big Five are all present, and a game drive here virtually guarantees encounters with Africa's most iconic animals. Named after the Maasai people who have lived alongside wildlife here for centuries, and the Mara River that courses through its heart, this reserve delivers the safari of your dreams.

Why Visit Masai Mara National Reserve?

The Masai Mara is the world's most reliable destination for big cat sightings. Its open terrain makes wildlife incredibly visible — lions lounge in the grass, cheetahs hunt on the plains in broad daylight, and leopards drape themselves in riverine trees. The Great Migration river crossings between July and October are Africa's most dramatic spectacle, but even outside migration season the Mara's resident wildlife is staggering. The surrounding Maasai conservancies offer exclusive game drives, night drives, and walking safaris unavailable in the main reserve. For families, the Mara's easy game viewing and short flight from Nairobi make it Kenya's most accessible world-class safari.
