About Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park is one of Africa's most iconic safari destinations, famous for its breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro — Africa's highest peak — rising majestically behind herds of elephants crossing the dusty plains. Covering 392 square kilometres at the foot of Kilimanjaro in southern Kenya, Amboseli is home to some of the largest free-ranging elephants in Africa, many with tusks reaching to the ground. The park's diverse habitats — from dried-up lake beds and sulphur springs to swamps, savannah, and acacia woodland — support an impressive array of wildlife despite its relatively compact size. The Amboseli elephants are among the world's most studied, with researcher Cynthia Moss documenting individual families since 1972. A C.A.T.S safari to Amboseli promises unforgettable photographic moments as elephants, giraffes, and zebras are framed against the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro.
Why Visit Amboseli National Park?
Amboseli delivers Africa's most iconic photograph — elephants with Kilimanjaro. The park's flat, open terrain and relatively compact size mean you encounter wildlife frequently and can cover the best areas in a single day. Amboseli's elephants are remarkably relaxed around vehicles, allowing intimate close-up encounters. The permanent swamps fed by Kilimanjaro's underground meltwater ensure year-round wildlife concentrations. For families, the short 4-hour drive from Nairobi (or 45-minute flight) and excellent game viewing make Amboseli a perfect safari introduction. The Maasai communities surrounding the park add rich cultural experiences.
